Strawberry Pickers, Cyprus

Once named for a sleepy god,
now named a beautiful tent,
land waits for work.

Giggling girls mount dirty tractors,
caps smudgedly gripped, hair
blackly whipping like shredded
veils. In rich furrows,
strawberries thicken beyond
tear-drops, rashly red,
a wet green wreath
for female gleaming. Boxed
for money, they sweetly stain
whoever stoops for them.
