L’AMARA PRIMAVERA / THE BITTER SPRING

Un arcano struggente
mi dà la primavera,
lo sento sempre nel cuore,
quando arriva la sera.

Tornano nella mente
ricordi di tempi andati,
credevo fermamente
che fossero cancellati.

Ma un eco di voce sento
di persona tanto stimata,
mi ridesta il sentimento
che da tempo era passato.

Questo è lo struggimento
che mi dona la primavera;
duolo e sospiri ardenti,
appena sta a calar la sera.

An agonizing torment
brings me spring,
I feel it always in my heart,
when evening comes.

Memories of times gone by
return to my mind,
I ferverently believed
had been erased.

But I hear the echo of a voice
of a person so admired,
it reawak ens in me the feeling
that for some time has passed.

This is the torment
that spring brings me;
grief and burning sighs,
just as the evening is about to ebb.
