UNDERSTUDY

I am diligent
I wear the circle skirt
Cloth cut on the bias

I push peas
An inch apart an inch down
Along the stringed grid

I push pins
Through each thorax
Row specimens by wing spots

Later I'll enter
A library of ladders
Above the Book of Kells

Only to be
Roped off again
My noisy shoes begging

For a button box jig
For a corncob pipe & a crone
Outside her shack, her beet

Juice made ink, her cow's
Hide vellum, her words
A peat piper's tune
