RITUAL

those Saturday morning bus trips
my nose flat against window
absorbing passing vista
red brick houses, tidy lawns, chiselled Niagara escarpment
between the village of Dundas and the city of Hamilton*

mom sat eyes turned inward
but glowed with anticipation
as she led from store to store
up and down aisles
caressing costly treasures

when it was time to go home
she remembered our purpose
despite my tears
pressed upon me
clothing of garish colours and several sizes too big

fifty years later
same blind panicky ritual
newly purchased garments returned
too large/wrong colour
