EMBELLISHING AN IRISH BIBLE After scraping the hide hairless, wiping off the lime, stretching and scraping the vellum one last time, the scribe sharpened his quill. He knew what it would take to design over a blotch, to color it turquoise blue and entwine a few eels with ecclesiastical faces, knot an encircled cross upon the spot where concentration faltered, draw a spiral-jointed wolf with slavering tongue that winds into the next word, outline the whole periphery with blood-red dots so future millennia of readers could scarcely decipher the place where imperfection caught itself and wrote good news with the upturned flair of a steady hand and the interlaced calligraphy of error.
