Departures
Summer 1956

Late evening, eating is done
they cast their eyes onto Sean.
The last of them now,
they look across to the east hills,
beyond is Birmingham, London.
They look west,
There is Boston, Chicago,
the four cities of his four brothers.
Bottle sorter, kitchen boy, now waiter,
not much left for him here, is there?
Sure he may as well go. For what is left but us
and we will be soon gone to our dust.
At his age, we would take the fast horse and go,
go from this grey, this pale grey Clare* and
bitter drab of it.
Go! Go, can far away hills be drabber?
