Fear of Flying

Samhain.* This fiery November eve, the sun
shoveled under. Candle lanterns sprint,
greeting earth and sea below the plane —

it’s sword, sickle, and scythe in this death
revel. Cold day’s obscured face, its
rippling veils. Clutching arm-rests, I shoot

a glimpse at what’s unmanifest outside clear
glass — lifetimes over crests and clouds.
Like summer’s underworld, I resign myself

to look down where the sun will appear again,
falling asleep at the outer edge
of the universe... Samhain.

*Samhain Eve (Oidhche Shamhna) is one of the principal festivals of the Celtic calendar, and it signifies the final harvest. In modern Ireland and Scotland, the name by which Halloween is still known is “Oidhche Shamhna.”
